6 Alternatives to Pasta and Potatoes

Spiralise Your Vegetables

Spiralising veggies is a super popular replacement for spaghetti. You can pick up a low-cost spiraliser [INSERT LINK] to make your own at home, or get ready-made versions in most supermarkets. Try courgetti (courgette spaghetti) instead of regular spaghetti with Bolognese, or scrape out the inside of a cooked squash for squashetti with tomato sauce.

Shirataki Noodles

These noodles are made out of konjac yams, which are naturally low-calorie, low-carb, and gluten-free. They come in a package of liquid and are usually sold in the produce section alongside tofu. They are recommended as a noodle replacement in Asian dishes as opposed to Italian-based cuisine.

Aubergine and Courgette Lasagna

Replace the pasta sheets in your homemade lasagna with thin slices of lengthways cut courgette and aubergine. Simple!

Cauliflower Mash

Chop up a cauliflower into bite-sized pieces. Steam or boil until cooked, then mash with a little butter, salt and pepper. For an even healthier alternative, try mashing with 0% fat natural yoghurt instead of butter.

Sweet Potato or Carrot Fries

A tasty and low-carb alternative to regular chips, cut a sweet potato or carrot into French fry size strips and cook in the oven or an air-fryer. If you prefer, you can cut wedge size portions, but allow extra cooking time. Season with salt and pepper before cooking, and use a low-cal cooking spray, to give them a bit of crisp.

Carrot and Turnip Mash

This goes great with roast dinners, or as a substitute for the mashed potato topping on cottage pie. Boil 500g of peeled and chopped carrots with 500g of peeled and chopped turnip, and mash when they are soft. Add a dash of nutmeg, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper, and you’re good to go!
