Green Plantain Tostones

With just three ingredients you will be able to make one of the best appetizers that you can imagine! Make them as small or big as you wish and serve them as an entree with dipping sauces or as a main dish combining them with some meat and extra veggies to complete the lunch!

Ingredients:

  • 2 large plantain, green
  • Sea salt to taste
  • Canola oil to fry

Instructions:

  1. With a sharp knife, carefully cut each end of the plantain.
  2. Make a lengthwise cut and remove the peel. Don’t throw it again because you will be using it later.
  3. Slice the plantain about a finger wide. The wider you cut the pieces, the bigger the toston will be. You can even make them as big as a plate using half of the plantain per toston.
  4. Place a pan with canola oil over medium heat. Make sure it is deep enough to fry the tostones with no problem.
  5. Fry the plantain slices until slightly golden and take them out of the oil.
  6. Place them in an absorbent paper and sprinkle some sea salt on both sides of each piece.
  7. Take each plantain slice and put them in between the plantain peel that you saved from earlier.
  8. Using something heavy, like a cutting board or a large plate, make pressure on the plantain to flat them in the toston shape.
  9. Take your flatten tostones back into the oil to fry them for a second time! When orange ish take them out.
  10. Place them in an absorbent paper again and fry them for a third and final time. This step is optional, but I recommend to do it if you want them really crispy. If you prefer them softer then to fry them twice is enough.
  11. Serve with your favorite dipping sauces or as a side dish.
