While your body needs foods as fuel for a workout, not all foods are ideal for pre-workout as they ruin your gym session. Here are the 7 worst foods you should avoid before a workout.
- Spicy foods
Spicy foods are treats to our taste buds but avoid them before you hit the gym as they stay longer in the digestive system and are harder to digest. They often lead to cramping, bloating and diarrhea.
- Fiber-filled foods
Eating fiber-rich foods like cereal, whole grain bread and oats might seem like a good idea but you will question the decision when you’re running at full speed ahead on the treadmill. They can cause discomfort mid-workout, leading to gas, stomach cramps and nausea.
- Carbonated beverages
Carbonated beverages like soda, fizzy waters and beer are nutritionally void and are a poor choice for pre-workout drink. They can make you feel bloated, nauseous, and may also lead to gastrointestinal distress.
- Nuts
Nuts are undoubtedly a great snack but they are one of the worse foods to eat before you hit the gym as they slow digestion. If you must eat it, make sure it is at least two hours before exercising.
- Cruciferous vegetables
Cruciferous veggies include broccoli, cabbage, bok choy, Brussels sprout and cauliflower. These vegetables contain high amounts of raffinose that can trigger abdominal bloating and excessive gas.
- Fruit juice
Fruit juice contains carbs and vitamins but you might want to think twice before you down a glass of juice as it doesn’t digest quickly and may cause cramps. It’s best to consume it as a post-workout drink.
- Dairy
Milk, cheese and yogurt have several health befits but they should only be consumed after a workout. Their high fat content can slow you down and increase your stomach’s acid content, which in turn leads to bloating and stomach upset.
In all, some of the foods above are nutritious but if you avoid them, your body will thank you.
