Homemade Soft Pretzels

These homemade soft pretzels are going to be your new favorite snack! This recipe is for sugar and cinnamon pretzels but the dough is really versatile so you will be able to create as many pretzels flavors as you wish.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups of all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp of active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup of milk, warm
  • 1 cup of butter, melted
  • 2 tbsp of sugar
  • 2 cups of wáter
  • 2 ½ tbsp of baking soda
  • A pinch of salt

For the topping:

  • ½ cup of butter, melted
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 tbsp of ground cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. In a medium bowl, add the warm milk, sugar and dry active yeast. Set aside for 5 minutes until foamy. Make sure the milk is warm to the touch but not too hot or the yeast won’t be effective.
  2. In a separate large bowl, sift in the all purpose flour.
  3. Add the salt and milk mixture into the all purpose flour.
  4. Incorporate the melted butter and stir to combine all the ingredients.
  5. The mixture will turn into a dough. Knead the pretzel dough until it won’t stick to the edges of the bowl. Add a bit more of flour If necessary.
  6. Keep kneading for about 3-5 minutes more and then place it in a clean bowl.
  7. Cover the bowl with a towel and let it grow for an hour.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  9. In a pot, over medium heat, add the water and baking soda. Heat until the baking soda dissolves completely. Turn off the heat and set aside.
  10. Divide the dough into pieces, as big or small as you want.
  11. Here is when you will decide the shape of your pretzels. You can do the classic shape or make balls, braids, sticks…
  12. If you choose the classic shape, stretch the dough until it looks like a long stick. Create a curve shape, like a smile, and then cross each end point sticking them to the bottom of the pretzel.
  13. Submerge the pretzel into the baking soda water for at least 10 minutes.
  14. Place in a baking sheet, previously lined, and bake for 12 minutes or until golden.
  15. Combine the sugar and ground cinnamon.
  16. When ready and still hot, brush them with melted butter and sprinkle them with the sugar and cinnamon mixture.
  17. Serve warm.
