Homemade Criollitos

These delicious criollitos are really popular in Argentina, there you can find them everywhere and they usually eat them with some mate for the afternoon snack.

Personally I like to fill them with some cream cheese and ham, so yummy for breakfast with a large cup of coffee. I usually eat them the savory way but you can also get creative and fill them with some fruits and chocolate spread!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of all purpose flour
  • 1 cup of warm water
  • 3/4 cup of lard
  • 1/4 cup of butter, melted
  • 8 gr of instant yeast
  • 1 tbsp of sugar
  • 1 tsp of salt

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, sift in the all purpose flour, instant yeast, sugar and salt. It is important to sift the dry ingredients to avoid lumps in the dough.
  2. When you have already all the dry ingredients in the bowl, give it a good stir to combine and add the lard. Start mixing using a whisk or an electric mixer if you have one.
  3. Incorporate the warm water into the bowl and keep combining until you get an even soft dough.
  4. Using your clean hands, start to knead the dough over a flat surface for at least 5 minutes.
  5. Place the dough in a bowl and cover it with a towel, let it rest for 45 minutes to an hour.
  6. Roll the dough for form a rectangle of about 1/2 inch thick.
  7. Brush some melted butter all over the rectangle dough and let it rest at room temperature for 20 minutes.
  8. Fold the rectangle in half, brush again with butter and let it rest for another 20 minutes.
  9. After repeating the previous step one or two times more, slightly roll the dough again and using a fork, create some tiny holes on top.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  11. Bake for 20 minutes or until completely golden.
  12. Serve warm with your favorite beverage!
