Ingredients:
For the donuts:
- 5 cups of all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1 ½ cups of milk, scalded
- ¾ cup of sugar
- ½ cup of shortening
- ¼ cup of water, warm
- 2 eggs, large
- 2 tbsp of dry yeast
- A pinch of salt
- Shortening for frying
For the glaze:
- 3 cups of powdered sugar, sifted
- ¼ cup of milk
- 3 tbsp of butter, melted
- 1 tsp of vanilla extract
Instructions:
For the donuts:
- In a large bowl, add the warm water and dry yeast. Give it a little stir and let it rest for at least 10 minutes. It is important to use warm water, not cold or hot.
- Ten minutes later, add into the same bowl the milk, eggs, shortening and half of the all-purpose flour. Whisk for about 5 minutes, by hand or with an electric mixer.
- Add the remaining all-purpose flour, sugar and salt to taste. Whisk for another 5 minutes or until completely combined. The second half is going to be harder to combine with a whisk, you might want to use your hands a bit.
- When the dough is ready, cover the bowl with a towel and let it rise. This will take about 2 hours.
- The dough will grow about twice the original size and there is when its ready to work with it.
- Sprinkle some flour over a clean, flat surface.
- Roll the dough to about ½ inch thick.
- Using a donut/cookie cutter, cut your donuts and place them in a baking sheet to let them rise again for another 40 minutes. Don’t forget to cover them with a towel.
- In a deep pot, over low heat, add the shortening.
- Start frying the donuts 2 or 3 at a time.
- When golden, set aside on paper towel.
For the glaze:
- In a large bowl, add the sifted powdered sugar, milk, butter and vanilla extract. Stir to combine.
- If you feel the glaze is too thick, add a bit more of milk. If it is too thin, add more powdered sugar.
- Dip the donuts while still warm and set aside to let them cool down for some minutes.
- Enjoy!!!
