Ingredients:

For the donuts:

  • 5 cups of all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 ½ cups of milk, scalded
  • ¾ cup of sugar
  • ½ cup of shortening
  • ¼ cup of water, warm
  • 2 eggs, large
  • 2 tbsp of dry yeast
  • A pinch of salt
  • Shortening for frying

For the glaze:

  • 3 cups of powdered sugar, sifted
  • ¼ cup of milk
  • 3 tbsp of butter, melted
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract

Instructions:

For the donuts:

  1. In a large bowl, add the warm water and dry yeast. Give it a little stir and let it rest for at least 10 minutes. It is important to use warm water, not cold or hot.
  2. Ten minutes later, add into the same bowl the milk, eggs, shortening and half of the all-purpose flour. Whisk for about 5 minutes, by hand or with an electric mixer.
  3. Add the remaining all-purpose flour, sugar and salt to taste. Whisk for another 5 minutes or until completely combined. The second half is going to be harder to combine with a whisk, you might want to use your hands a bit.
  4. When the dough is ready, cover the bowl with a towel and let it rise. This will take about 2 hours.
  5. The dough will grow about twice the original size and there is when its ready to work with it.
  6. Sprinkle some flour over a clean, flat surface.
  7. Roll the dough to about ½ inch thick.
  8. Using a donut/cookie cutter, cut your donuts and place them in a baking sheet to let them rise again for another 40 minutes. Don’t forget to cover them with a towel.
  9. In a deep pot, over low heat, add the shortening.
  10. Start frying the donuts 2 or 3 at a time.
  11. When golden, set aside on paper towel.

For the glaze:

  1. In a large bowl, add the sifted powdered sugar, milk, butter and vanilla extract. Stir to combine.
  2. If you feel the glaze is too thick, add a bit more of milk. If it is too thin, add more powdered sugar.
  3. Dip the donuts while still warm and set aside to let them cool down for some minutes.
  4. Enjoy!!!
