Homemade Mashed Potatoes with Gravy

There are some classic recipes that are important to learn because they’ll help you to cook a really good dinner without too much effort. This homemade gravy is perfect for side dishes or to serve with any kind of meat.

Ingredients:

For the mashed potatoes:

  • 500 g of potatoes, peeled
  • ¼ cup of milk
  • ¼ cup of cream
  • 1 tbsp. of butter
  • A pinch of salt

For the gravy:

  • 1 cup of beef stock
  • ¼ cup of all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup of butter
  • 1 tsp of onion powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Instructions:

For the mashed potatoes

  1. In a large pot, add water, salt and peeled potatoes. Bring to boil.
  2. Make sure the potatoes are cooked but still a bit firm. This will take about 15 to 18 minutes.
  3. Drain the potatoes and place them in a deep bowl. Set aside.
  4. In a small saucepan, over low heat, add the milk, cream and butter. When the butter melts, turn off the heat.
  5. Pour the cream mixture into the bowl.
  6. Using a potato masher, blend all the ingredients until creamy. If you want a bit of texture, leave some small potato pieces.

For the gravy:

  1. In a saucepan, over low heat, add the butter and stir until melted
  2. Sift in the all-purpose flour and start to whisk until both ingredients are completely combined.
  3. Keep whisking for about 10 minutes. You need to cook the flour before adding anything else.
  4. Add the beef stock, onion powder, salt and black pepper. Keep whisking.
  5. Don’t stop whisking until you get a thick consistency.
  6. When ready, turn off and set aside to cool down.
  7. You can serve them separately or you can also pour the gravy on the mashed potatoes, give it a stir and serve like that.
