There are some classic recipes that are important to learn because they’ll help you to cook a really good dinner without too much effort. This homemade gravy is perfect for side dishes or to serve with any kind of meat.
Ingredients:
For the mashed potatoes:
- 500 g of potatoes, peeled
- ¼ cup of milk
- ¼ cup of cream
- 1 tbsp. of butter
- A pinch of salt
For the gravy:
- 1 cup of beef stock
- ¼ cup of all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup of butter
- 1 tsp of onion powder
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper to taste
Instructions:
For the mashed potatoes
- In a large pot, add water, salt and peeled potatoes. Bring to boil.
- Make sure the potatoes are cooked but still a bit firm. This will take about 15 to 18 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes and place them in a deep bowl. Set aside.
- In a small saucepan, over low heat, add the milk, cream and butter. When the butter melts, turn off the heat.
- Pour the cream mixture into the bowl.
- Using a potato masher, blend all the ingredients until creamy. If you want a bit of texture, leave some small potato pieces.
For the gravy:
- In a saucepan, over low heat, add the butter and stir until melted
- Sift in the all-purpose flour and start to whisk until both ingredients are completely combined.
- Keep whisking for about 10 minutes. You need to cook the flour before adding anything else.
- Add the beef stock, onion powder, salt and black pepper. Keep whisking.
- Don’t stop whisking until you get a thick consistency.
- When ready, turn off and set aside to cool down.
- You can serve them separately or you can also pour the gravy on the mashed potatoes, give it a stir and serve like that.
