Onion and Cheddar Dices

These dices are perfect to make for any entrée! As delicious and crispy as onion rings but even cooler.

Ingredients:

  • 3 onions, medium
  • 400 g of cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 cups of breadcrumbs
  • 1 cup of flour, sifted
  • ¼ cup of cornstarch, sifted
  • 2 cups of beer
  • 1 egg, whisked
  • 2 tbsp of garlic powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • Oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Cut the onions into medium size dices. Don’t worry if you end with different sizes as all of them are going to be combined with the cheese.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, salt and black pepper.
  3. Add in the beer and whisked egg into the bowl. Stir the mixture until completely combined. Set aside to use in a bit.
  4. In another bowl, mix together the onion pieces and shredded cheese. You can use more than one kind of cheese if you want.
  5. Take about 1 tbsp of onion and cheddar mixture and press them forming a cube.
  6. Place your cubes in a tray and refrigerate them for at least 20 minutes before frying them. This will help to keep their shape. If you don’t want to wait, I recommend doing balls instead of dices.
  7. Prepare two bowls, one with the flour mixture and the second with breadcrumbs.
  8. In a deep pot, add the oil for frying.
  9. Take each onion dice and dip it first into the flour mixture and then into the breadcrumbs. Make sure to cover them completely.
  10. Fry until golden brown. Don’t fry more than 5 at a time or they will cool down the oil and you won’t get them as crispy.
  11. Serve with your favorite dipping sauces.
